Umfangreiche Recherchen eruierten Bestrebungen der modernen wissenschaftlichen Theorien und therapeutischen Ansätze, konsensuellen Sadomasochismus und seine Praktizierenden aus der pathologischen Spezifizierung der Vergangenheit herauszunehmen und vorurteilsfrei zu erforschen. Es konnte aufgedeckt werden, dass schon Krafft-Ebing, entgegen allen recherchierten Zitationen, eine Differenzierung in Perversitäten (Laster) und Perversionen (Krankheit) unternahm.
Anschließend wurden in einer Online-Erhebung Unterschiede in den fünf Dimensionen der Persönlichkeit von Lesenden und Nicht-Lesenden des Buches „Shades of gray“ (N = 1576) untersucht. Als Moderator wurde schon mal mit SM beschäftigt eingesetzt. Die Ergebnisse werden entweder nicht signifikant oder erreichen nach Konvention von Cohen nur kleine Werte. Die niedrigeren Werte bzgl. Neurotizismus sowohl bei den SM-Vertrauten unter den Lesenden als auch unter den Nicht-Lesenden überraschten und sollten weiter untersucht werden.
Teile aus der Studie von Brockmann (1991) wurden repliziert, mittels derer allgemein nach Meinung und Affinität zu SM gefragt wurde. Die Ergebnisse lassen eine Liberalisierung vermuten, allerdings sind Stichprobeneffekte sehr wahrscheinlich.
Auf Skalen von jeweils 1 bis a hundred erreichten die SM-Frauen bei der Selbsteinschätzung des Emanzipations- und Selbstbewusstseinsgrades höhere Werte als die Vanilla - Frauen.
Unter den SM-Unerfahrenen zeigten die Auswertungen der selbst generierten goods, dass Lesende von „Shades of gray“ signifikant mehr über SM wissen als Nicht-Lesende. Vor allem bei den negativ formulierten goods, wie z.B. „Sadomasochismus (SM) hat mit Gewalt zu tun“, zeigten die Lesenden bei mittleren Effektgrößen mehr Wissen über SM als die Nicht-Lesenden. „Shades of gray“ regte zwar fifty six% der SM-unerfahrenen Lesenden an über eigene Phantasien nachzudenken, die Lust, Spielarten des SM actual auszuprobieren battle aber sowohl bei den Lesenden als auch bei den Nicht-Lesenden gering.
